Mahalaya Paksha is a significant period for expressing gratitude to our ancestors. It’s believed that during this time, ancestors, or pithrus, descend to Earth to accept the tharpana and shraadha we offer and feel content.

What is Mahalaya Paksha?

Mahalaya Paksha refers to the 15-day waning phase of the moon leading up to the new moon (Amavasya) in the Tamil month of Purattasi. During this time, offering tharpana and shraadha to ancestors and performing charitable acts is considered highly auspicious, as it is believed to secure their blessings.

Who Should Perform the Rituals?

  • Those who have lost their father or ancestors.
  • The son of the deceased should perform the rituals.
  • If there is no son, other family members can do so.

What Should Be Done?

  • Tharpana: An offering to ancestors using sesame seeds, water, and dharba grass.
  • Shraadha: A ritual of offering food to ancestors.
  • Annadhanam / Charity: Providing food to the hungry and helping those in need.

For Whom Can These Rituals Be Performed?

During Mahalaya Paksha, tharpana can be offered not only to parents and grandparents but also to:

  • Relatives
  • Friends
  • Elders who passed away without children

These individuals are known as Karunika Pithrus.
