Mahalaya Paksha is a significant period for expressing gratitude to our ancestors. It’s believed that during this time, ancestors, or pithrus, descend to Earth to accept the tharpana and shraadha we offer and feel content.
Mahalaya Paksha refers to the 15-day waning phase of the moon leading up to the new moon (Amavasya) in the Tamil month of Purattasi. During this time, offering tharpana and shraadha to ancestors and performing charitable acts is considered highly auspicious, as it is believed to secure their blessings.
