The history of this temple is very ancient. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams that has received the Mangalasasanam (blessings) of Perumal. According to the Puranas, it is believed that Maha Vishnu manifested here as Devanathan in response to Lord Brahma’s plea. Great sages like Vasishta Muni and Vyasa have performed penance here and received Perumal’s blessings. The temple flourished through various renovations during the periods of the Cholas, Pallavas, and Vijayanagara kings.
This temple houses two main shrines: the Thrivikrama Perumal Sannadhi and the Devanatha Perumal Sannadhi. Facing east, the temple’s Raja Gopuram (main tower) has five tiers. Upon entering, spacious corridors and beautiful mandapams welcome us.
Devanatha Perumal Sannadhi: Here, Perumal blesses devotees in a standing posture with four arms, accompanied by Sridevi and Bhoodevi.
Thrivikrama Perumal Sannadhi: In this shrine, Perumal appears in the grand Thrivikrama (Ulagalanda Perumal) posture, with one leg raised and the other foot planted on the earth. This shrine is particularly renowned.
Nayagi Thayar Sannadhi: There is a separate shrine for Hemambuja Nayagi Thayar, the consort of Devanatha Perumal.
Anjaneyar Sannadhi: A majestic Anjaneyar (Hanuman) shrine is located in the northeastern corner of the temple.
Other Sannadhis: Besides these, there are also shrines for Andal, Garuda Alwar, and others.
Temple Tank: A large holy tank is situated outside the temple. Bathing in it is considered meritorious.

Vaikunta Ekadasi: This is a very significant festival for Perumal. A large number of devotees participate in the opening of the “Swarga Vasal” (Gateway to Heaven).
Chithirai Brahmotsavam: During this ten-day festival, Perumal is taken in procession on various vahanams (mounts). The chariot procession is particularly famous.
Pavithrotsavam: Celebrated in the month of Aadi (July-August), this festival is observed as a way to purify and renew the temple.
Navaratri: Special pujas are performed for Nayagi Thayar for nine days during Navaratri.
Diwali and Pongal: These festivals are also celebrated grandly at the temple.
Arulmigu Devanatha Perumal Temple, Thiruvanthipuram, is generally open from 6:30 AM to 12:00 PM in the morning and from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the evening.
