The Sacred Mango Tree of Kanchi Ekambaranathar Temple

sthala-vriksha

At the Kanchi Ekambaranathar Temple stands a legendary sacred mango tree (the Sthala Vriksha) that has existed for thousands of years.

According to tradition, this sacred tree has been part of the temple for nearly 3,500 years. In fact, agricultural scholars have propagated a new sapling from a tissue sample of this ancient tree, and that sapling now grows in the famous Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple.

Every leaf of this tree is said to possess medicinal properties. What makes it truly unique is that this single tree bears fruits with different tastes—a wonder that devotees and elders have experienced and spoken about for generations.

Even today, this sacred tree continues to thrive. Though it had once begun to wither, it has now been revived and nurtured back to life.

This Sthala Vriksha is believed to radiate spiritual energy and healing power. Pilgrims visiting the Kanchi Kamakshi Temple often sit under its cooling shade before continuing their spiritual journey.

Let us, too, make time to visit the Kanchi Ekambaranathar Temple, sit under the sacred tree’s shade, meditate, and experience the deep sense of peace it brings.

“A life without purpose is like a boat without a rudder.”
