Verse 1 Explanation:
She is the Mother, Shambhavi, the one adorned with the crescent moon (Chandramauli), Abala, Aparna, Uma, Parvati, Kali, the daughter of Himavan (Haimavati), Shiva, the three-eyed one (Trinayani), Katyayani, and Bhairavi. She embodies eternal youth (Savitri Navayauvana), bestows auspiciousness, and grants imperial prosperity (Samrajya Lakshmi). She is the embodiment of pure consciousness (Chidrupi), the supreme goddess (Paradevata), and Bhagavati Sri Raja Rajeshwari.
Verse 2 Explanation:
This Mother is the enchanting deity (Mohini Devata), the ruler of the three worlds (Tribhuvani), and the bestower of supreme bliss. She is Saraswati (Vani), possesses hands soft like tender leaves, and playfully listens to and plays the flute. She is auspicious (Kalyani), has a face glowing like the full moon, and is the destroyer of the demon Dhumraksha. She is the embodiment of pure consciousness, the supreme goddess, and Bhagavati Sri Raja Rajeshwari.
Verse 3 Explanation:
The Mother is adorned with gem-studded anklets (Nupura), bangles (Kankana), armlets, and various beautiful necklaces. She shines in garlands made of Jati and Champaka flowers, the Vaijayanti garland, and neck ornaments. Her sacred hands are beautifully engaged in playing the Veena and the flute, and She is seated majestically in the heroic posture (Veerasana). She is the embodiment of pure consciousness, the supreme goddess, and Bhagavati Sri Raja Rajeshwari.
Verse 4 Explanation:
This Mother takes the forms of Rautrhini, Bhadrakali, Bagala with a face glowing like blazing fire, Vaishnavi, Brahmani, and Tripurantaki. She is worshiped by the celestial gods (Suranutha) and shines with a brilliant, dazzling effulgence. She is Chamunda, the mother who protects and nourishes those who seek her refuge, Dakshayani, and the all-powerful one. She is the embodiment of pure consciousness, the supreme goddess, and Bhagavati Sri Raja Rajeshwari.
Verse 5 Explanation:
The Mother holds a trident (Shula), bow, mace, and goad (Ankusha) in her sacred hands, and wears the crescent moon on her head. She is Varahi, the subduer of the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, and is worshiped by Saraswati (Vani) and Lakshmi (Rama). She is the crusher of demons like Malla and Mookasura, Maheshwari, and Ambika. She is the embodiment of pure consciousness, the supreme goddess, and Bhagavati Sri Raja Rajeshwari.
Verse 6 Explanation:
This Mother performs the cosmic functions of creation, protection, and destruction (Srushti-Stithi-Samhara), and shines as the supreme one. She is Gayatri, the nectarine essence of the primordial syllable Om (Pranava), and the embodiment of Omkara. Her sacred feet are worshiped and adorned by the gods, and She is fiercely intent on destroying demons. She is the embodiment of pure consciousness, the supreme goddess, and Bhagavati Sri Raja Rajeshwari.
Verse 7 Explanation:
The Mother is praised by the eternal Vedas and Agamas. She is the supreme deity, the universal Mother (Jaganmatha) who creates everything from the four-faced Brahma down to a tiny ant. She enchants the entire universe, generates the five sacred pranavas, acts as the root of the syllable ‘Repha’, and bears the names Chidkala and Malini. She is the embodiment of pure consciousness, the supreme goddess, and Bhagavati Sri Raja Rajeshwari.
Verse 8 Explanation:
The Mother is deeply devoted to protecting her devotees. Whoever recites these eight verses (Ambashtakam) dedicated to Her will become the recipient of her graceful, playful sidelong glances and will attain magnificent, undiminishing, and eternal wealth. Furthermore, the recitation of this king of mantras (Mantra Raja) will ultimately grant them liberation (Moksha). She is the embodiment of pure consciousness, the supreme goddess, and Bhagavati Sri Raja Rajeshwari.
These 8 verses praising Sri Rajarajeshwari Devi have the power to bestow everlasting wealth, status, fame, positions of authority, a healthy and auspicious family life, and higher education.
Even though the very title “Sri Rajarajeshwari Ashtakam” proclaims Her as the Queen of all Gods, all-powerful, and omnipresent, every single verse affectionately begins with the word “Amba“, which means “Mother” – the Mother of the entire universe. Similarly, the final line of every verse culminates by addressing Parvati Devi as the supreme being above all, the embodiment of pure consciousness, the possessor of all wealth, and the sovereign ruler over all deities: Sri Raja Rajeshwari. In truth, all these verses beautifully represent the various divine avatars of Goddess Parvati.
