The Śrī Nanda Nandanāṣṭakam is a beautiful composition of eight verses that glorifies the enchanting form of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the beloved son of Nanda Mahārāja. This hymn, which paints a vivid picture of the Lord’s celestial beauty and grace, is a powerful tool for meditation. By sincerely chanting these verses, a devotee can easily fix their mind on the Lord and attain peace.
Let’s dive into the enchanting descriptions of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the source of all bliss:
Sucāru vaktra maṇḍalam, sukarṇa ratna kuṇḍalam;
Sucarcitāṅga candanam, namāmi nanda-nandanam.
He has a beautiful, charming face and wears gem-studded earrings on His nice ears. His limbs are smeared with fragrant sandalwood paste. I bow down to the son of Nanda.
Sudīrgha netra paṅkajam, śikhī śikhaṇḍa mūrdhajam;
Ananta koṭi mohanam, namāmi nanda nandanam.
His eyes are long like lotus petals, and His head is adorned with a peacock feather. He possesses a charm that infatuates countless millions. I bow down to the son of Nanda.
Sunāsikāgra mauktikam, svaccha danta paṅktikam;
Navāmbudāṅga cikkaṇam, namāmi nanda nandanam.
He wears a pearl at the tip of His nice nose and has pure, uniform rows of teeth. His complexion is smooth and dark like a fresh rain cloud. I bow down to the son of Nanda.
Kareṇa veṇu rañcitam, gati karīndragañjitam;
Dukūla pīta suśobhanam, namāmi nanda nandanam.
His hand is graced by a flute (veṇu), and His gait surpasses the grace of a majestic elephant. He is decorated by a beautiful, bright yellow silk garment. I bow down to the son of Nanda.
Tribhaṅga deha sundaram, nakha dyuti sudhākaram;
Amūlya ratna bhūṣaṇam, namāmi nanda nandanam.
He has a beautiful body bent in three places (Tribhaṅga pose). The glow from His fingernails is like nectarean moonlight. He is decorated with priceless gem ornaments. I bow down to the son of Nanda.
Sugandha aṅga saurabham, uro virāji kaustubham;
Sphūrjit vatsa lāñchanam, namāmi nanda nandanam.
His body emanates a sweet fragrance; a Kaustubha gem shines on His chest. He is resplendent with the mark of Śrīvatsa on His chest. I bow down to the son of Nanda.
Vṛndāvana sunāgaram, vilāsūnāga vāsasam;
Surendra garva mocanam, namāmi nanda nandanam.
He is the most charming enjoyer of Vṛndāvana, living in the abode of blissful pastimes. He humiliated the pride of Indra, the king of the devas. I bow down to the son of Nanda.
Vrajāṅganā sunāyakam, sadā sukha pradāyakam;
Jaganmana: pralobhanam, namāmi nanda nandanam.
He is the dear hero of the gopīs (Vrajāṅganās) and is the eternal bestower of happiness. He enchants the minds of the entire universe. I bow down to the son of Nanda.
Phala Śruti (Benefit of Chanting)
Śrī nanda nandanāṣṭakam paṭhet ya śraddhayānvitaḥ;
Tareda bhavābdhim dustaram, labhettadaṅkhrī yugtakam.
Whoever reads this Śrī Nanda Nandanāṣṭakam with faith and sincerity will cross the formidable ocean of material existence (saṃsāra) and attain the pair of His lotus feet.
