In the Tamil calendar, Panguni is the 12th month, and Uthiram is the 12th star (Nakshatra). The auspicious day when these two coincide is celebrated as Panguni Uthiram.
It was during this month that Lord Murugan, after seeking the blessings of his parents, began his journey to subdue the arrogance of the Asuras (demons).
As Lord Murugan traveled in a chariot drawn by horses with Lord Vayu (the Wind God) as his charioteer, a small mountain began to grow abnormally large, blocking the path of his army. Sage Narada explained that this mountain was actually an Asura named Krounchan, a dark force cursed by Sage Agastya to remain a mountain for his misdeeds. Narada also informed him that nearby, in Mayapuripattinam, Tarakasuran (the elephant-faced brother of Surapadman) was ruling and tormenting the Devas.
Lord Murugan commanded his commander-in-chief, Veerabahu, to take half the army and defeat Tarakasuran. A fierce battle ensued. Tarakasuran used his mace to strike the warrior Veerakesari and later used a trident to knock Veerabahu unconscious.
Upon regaining consciousness, Veerabahu attacked with renewed ferocity. Unable to withstand the assault, Tarakasuran used his magical powers to turn into a rat and hid inside the Krouncha mountain. When the army followed him, the mountain’s magical traps and Tarakasuran’s forces decimated Murugan’s troops.
Learning this, Lord Murugan entered the battlefield himself. Tarakasuran mocked Murugan, calling him a mere boy, but was soon overwhelmed by the Lord’s power. When the demon tried to hide inside the mountain again, Murugan hurled his Vel (Sacred Spear). The Vel shattered the mountain into pieces and slew Tarakasuran. Following this victory, Lord Murugan married Deivayanai. That glorious day is celebrated as Panguni Uthiram.

It is traditional to conduct auspicious events during the Uthiram star. Ancient scriptures state that many divine weddings took place on this day:
Observing the “Kalyanasundara Vratam” (fasting) on this day helps those facing delays in marriage find a good spouse and ensures a happy domestic life.
The number 12 is sacred on this day (12th month, 12th star, and the 12-handed Lord Murugan). In Palani, devotees carry Theertham (holy water) from the Kaveri river in Kodumudi to perform a special Abhishekam for Lord Murugan. This day also celebrates the glory of the river Kaveri.
The Srimad Bhagavatam states that all holy waters in India converge into the Tumburu Theertham in Tirupati on this day. Bathing there and worshipping Lord Venkatachalapathy is highly meritorious.
